Kobus Nieuwoudt Architects made extensive use of glass in the form of wrap-around windows. Privacy was achieved by introducing sliding slatted/louvred screens also providing sun screening, ventilation when windows are open, as well as security. The owner says that despite the estate originally experiencing lengthy delays in obtaining its zoning for a golf course, he forged ahead and construction commenced immediately after approvals were confirmed. He says that the finished product was aimed at creating an enticing new environment for his family to re-locate to. A perfect partnership between husband and wife ensued, with the owner managing the actual design, construction and decor, while his wife offered invaluable supporting input throughout the entire process. The owner says that when his family finally viewed the completed project, it was the most wonderful and pleasing surprise. Leon Egen, of Garden Route Building Consultants, says his involvement in this project was initiated by a chance meeting with the owner that led not only to the highly successful construction of this project, but several others in different regions of the country.

Leon says that the use of large concrete slabs in the construction of this house created interesting spaces as well as impressive visual effects. He says the natural slope of the site enhanced the stunning end result, and special features such as the magnificent double volume spaces in different living areas complement the breathtaking surroundings of the natural outdoor environment. For him, the most exquisite part of the house, and also where the construction presented some challenges, is the unique viewpoint that was designed almost as a look-out tower above the lower swimming pool.
